Durrat Marina is an iconic $1.3 billion waterside development envisioned as a premier example of 21st-century urban planning. Conceived and shaped by leading designers, this project reflects the unlimited potential of dreams. It offers a grand vision for waterside living and a blueprint for a landmark community. Helian Ltd, a UK-based export distributor, leveraged its regional contacts to tender for the marina’s fuel installation project. The construction and project management consultants, Al Hamad Trading & Contracting, were responsible for the design and installation of the marina. However, they lacked expertise in fuelling solutions. So they engaged with Hytek. Our expertise in marina projects was instrumental in delivering a comprehensive and bespoke fuelling solution.
The challenge
The project required the design and implementation of a refuelling system that could meet the specific needs of a high-profile, coastal marina. A key challenge was creating a system capable of dispensing petrol, as well as diesel fuels. While also adhering to hazardous zone safety requirements. The dispensers had to be constructed with materials that could withstand the harsh marine environment, as well as incorporate precise pre-set fuelling capabilities. Additionally, the system needed to provide refuelling flexibility across thirty meters of pontoon on both sides, which required modifications to standard hose rewind systems. Finally, coordinating multiple UK suppliers to deliver a comprehensive and turnkey fuelling solution in kit form added further complexity to the project.
Delivering the fuelling solution for Durrat Marina was an exciting challenge that showcased Hytek's ability to innovate and adapt. The Bespoke Fuelling Solution
Leveraging extensive experience in marina projects, Hytek worked directly with Al Hamad Trading, design consultants, and pontoon designers to provide an optimal solution. Here’s how we addressed the challenges:
1. Customised Fuel Dispenser Design The dispensers were constructed using marine-grade 316 stainless steel to ensure durability and resistance to the harsh coastal environment. To meet the requirement for precise pre-set fuelling, our in-house R&D team developed a bespoke keypad interface that controlled dual-stage solenoids. This allowed accurate pre-set dispensing without any risk of overrun. To provide refuelling flexibility within thirty meters on both sides of the pontoon, we designed a unique modification to standard hose rewind systems. The dispensers were mounted on single plinths and pre-assembled during manufacturing, simplifying the installation process on-site.
2. Pipework and Pump Specification We collaborated with partners to design a dual containment pipe system equipped with a leak detection feature for added safety, as well as environmental protection. In addition, the team also calculated the appropriate pipe sizes and submersible pump specifications. Therefore ensuring the system delivered optimum flow rates throughout the marina.
3. Risk Assessment and Design Approvals The team conducted detailed hazard assessments to identify and mitigate risks associated with dispensing petrol, as well as diesel fuels in a marina environment. Through several design revisions and refinements, the final specification was approved by the Marina Authority, ensuring all safety and operational requirements were met.
4. Pre-Delivery Inspection To guarantee quality and efficiency, the complete fuelling solution was assembled and inspected in the UK prior to delivery. This ensured that all components were fully operational and ready for installation upon arrival, minimising delays and complexities on-site.
The Results
We successfully delivered a comprehensive, pre-assembled fuelling solution tailored to Durrat Marina’s unique requirements. By coordinating with UK partners and consulting directly with project stakeholders, we ensured the delivery of a world-class system for this iconic development.
