We recently worked directly for a leading UK supermarket defining the fuel dispenser specification to upgrade and future-proof the fuel infrastructure at their Distribution Centres. Therefore, ensuring compatibility with new fuels like HVO and enhancing safety with a switch to a suction-based AdBlue® delivery system. Our tailored solution standardised equipment across all sites, improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability for the long-term. We supplied the equipment via their chosen supply and installation companies.
The challenge
A leading UK supermarket embarked on a long-term project to upgrade fuel infrastructure across 20+ Distribution Centres over the next 8–10 years. This initiative is part of their commitment to increased efficiency and sustainability. Thereby ensuring that the installations are ready for the transition to new fuels.
One critical aspect of the upgrade was the need to switch from a pressure-based AdBlue® delivery system to a safer, more environmentally friendly suction system. This was a clear need from their Petroleum Engineering Team. Traditionally, AdBlue® delivery systems rely on pressurised lines, with submersible pumps in tanks that push AdBlue® to dispensing nozzles. However, pressure systems come with risks. Because a failure in monitoring could result in a high-pressure leak, potentially causing environmental harm.
In contrast, a suction system uses a pump inside the dispenser to draw AdBlue® at much lower pressure. Therefore, reducing environmental risks in case of a failure. With both above-ground and below-ground tanks in place, the challenge was not only to implement the new system but also to ensure it could handle the lift required to draw AdBlue® from various tank configurations. Additionally, the equipment needed to be compatible with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to future-proof the infrastructure.
Worked with the customer's technical team and contractors to develop a tailored solution.
Selected proven Pumptronics equipment to ensure compatibility with both current and future fuels.
Integrated high hose masts and safety breaks to reduce risks and prevent damage.
Engineered a unified twin-cabinet design for all fuel types, streamlining operations across sites.
Hytek’s unique twin-cabinet design was engineered specifically for dispensing Diesel, HVO, and AdBlue®, providing a unified solution for all fuel types across the Distribution Centres. The single design specification ensures consistency across all locations, streamlining operations and maintenance.

Hytek worked closely with the customer’s Petroleum Technical Team, as well as leading contractors in groundworks, pipework, and tank supply, to develop a tailored solution. Our team conducted a detailed analysis of the AdBlue® system requirements. This included lift and pipe run considerations, in order to create a standard AdBlue® dispenser specification for both above-ground and below-ground tanks.
The Pumptronics dispensing equipment was chosen and proven across thousands of commercial sites with millions of litres of fuel dispensed including HVO and AdBlue®. At the same time ensuring future compatibility with alternative fuels alongside traditional diesel.
Safety was a top priority throughout the design process. So, we incorporated high hose masts to extend hose reach, eliminating the safety hazard of hoses dragging on the ground. To address the common issue of drive-offs, where pumps are damaged when vehicles drive away with hoses still attached, we installed safety breaks on both diesel and AdBlue® hoses to mitigate potential damage and reduce risk.
Hytek’s unique twin-cabinet design was engineered specifically for dispensing diesel, HVO, and AdBlue®. Therefore providing a unified solution for all fuel types across the Distribution Centres. The single design specification ensures consistency across all locations, streamlining operations and maintenance.
We also prioritised service and maintenance flexibility, using standard components that allow the supermarket to choose from multiple authorised service partners, ensuring long-term operational reliability.
The customer’s Petroleum Team approved Hytek’s technical specification, and we are now the preferred supplier for commercial fuel dispensers across the supermarket’s network. The Pumptronics units, configured for both current and future fuel needs, are now the standard across all Distribution and Fulfilment Centres, supporting the supermarket’s journey toward sustainability and operational efficiency.
